Fact & Fiction
Intelligence work is often misunderstood. Here, we debunk some of the common misconceptions about working in an intelligence organisation:
“No one can know that I work in SID.” – NOT TRUE.
FACT
You can choose to tell your close and trusted family members that you work in SID. Within government, SID officers identify themselves when it is needed for their work.
In our experience, being discreet in talking about our work has not stopped us from being social! While we do not actively seek attention or public recognition for the work we do, we are just like any of you who have friends and family to love and treasure.
“I will not have time for my family, or my personal pursuits.” – QUITE THE OPPOSITE!
FACT
Many of us work normal office hours and enjoy our weekends.
We do our best to ensure that our officers have ample time for family and personal pursuits. You need rest and a fulfilling life outside of work because otherwise, how can we expect you to have the energy and focus to perform well in times of need?
The work we do is important and contingencies do arise from time to time, but not more so than most other jobs. It is important to us that the way we work is sustainable. We offer flexible work hours and arrangements to meet our staff's needs as they go through different life stages.
“I will find fame and fortune.” – NOT TRUE.
FACT
Apply elsewhere if these are your key goals!
As part of the civil service, we take care to ensure that our staff are compensated fairly and competitively. But what we are looking for are people who seek a meaningful career in protecting Singapore, our home.
We work behind the scenes, without fanfare. That is okay, because during those moments of success when you make a real difference to Singapore, you can find a deep sense of satisfaction that outlasts fame.
“I must be a top political science graduate from a famous university.” – NOT TRUE.
FACT
We welcome talent in any form, both fresh graduates and mid-careerists across all specialties.
We recruit widely as we have a variety of job roles; we want to evolve well to meet future challenges; and the need for us to succeed is far higher than elsewhere. So diversity must be in our DNA.
We're looking out for people who are reflective, adaptive, good at what they do, yet always hungry to be better. Does it describe you?
“Once I join, I cannot leave.” – NOT TRUE.
FACT
SID officers can choose to leave at any point in time. Many of our alumni have done well outside the organisation in diverse careers.
In reality, most of our officers choose to spend their careers with SID due to the strong sense of mission, and the developmental opportunities. We also spend a lot of effort investing in our officers’ growth. In addition, we have a variety of roles that officers can try out if they want a different career pathway, without needing to leave the organisation. There are also opportunities to be seconded to other parts of government.
“I will be in a dangerous job.” – NOT TRUE.
FACT
We do have officers who are in more operational roles, where similar to all frontline jobs, there is a higher level of risk and they need to exercise good judgement and care. But whatever role you choose, we assure you that personnel safety is a top priority for SID. This has been our approach from the start, so we have robust measures in place.
These operational roles are a subset of the jobs we offer. As our work is complex, we have a wide range of roles that require diverse skillsets.
“Mid-careerists are sought for their existing skillsets and have limited developmental opportunities.” – NOT TRUE.
FACT
SID is an equal opportunity employer. While mid-careerists are able to contribute to SID with their existing skillsets and experience, SID continues to help them maintain their professional relevance through continuous learning and upskilling opportunities; including relevant postgraduate studies and secondments or industry attachments opportunities. With their expertise, mid-careerists have also taken on leadership positions to lead teams in their functional areas.
